The mission of Oriental Art Society of Chicago is to bring together lovers of Asian antiques and Orientalia; to enrich each member through viewing oriental antique objects and sharing information, knowledge, and experience. Our membership consists of serious and casual collectors, dealers, appraisers, scholars, and students within the metropolitan area of Chicago.
Formal programs are presented by members and invited guests who have a special interest, expertise or collection they are willing to share.
Topics range from Japanese netsuke to Indian Buddha sculpture. The speaker may emphasize iconography, connoisseurship, auction prices, or cultural celebrations in various locales within the Asian perimeter.
The concluding segment of each program is devoted to the fun time of "Show and Tell," an informal framework that provides members with the voluntary opportunity to present selected pieces that are related to the evening's presentation. The members have the opportunity of asking questions or sharing their knowledge about identification, restoration, or other topics that enrich and expand the evening's presentation.
Meetings are generally held on the third Wednesday of the month at an Oriental restaurant or at an appropriate location for museum walks, tours, and other special events. For good conversation and networking, members are invited to dine together at 6:00 P.M. Meetings begin promptly at 7:30 P.M., and are open to invited guests. Membership is encouraged.
